Between the Sky and the Sea

Boka Symphony Orchestra and City Choir “Jadran” to Open the Third Tivat Music Festival

A gala evening titled Between the Sky and the Sea will ceremoniously open the third edition of the Tivat Music Festival on 25 June, celebrating the world of opera. For the first time, the TMF opening concert will take place at the Summer Stage, where the Tivat audience will also have the opportunity to experience the renewed Boka Symphony Orchestra in its premiere performance under the baton of Chief Conductor, Maestro Mladen Tarbuk.

Joined by the City Choir “Jadran”, led by Professor Andrea Orlando Tripović under the auspices of the Tivat Cultural Centre, the concert will feature soloists Ermin Ašćerić, tenor, and Milica Lalošević, soprano. Audiences can expect a magnificent musical evening filled with some of Verdi’s most celebrated arias and choral pieces from NabuccoLa Traviata and Rigoletto, alongside refined gems from the operetta repertoire of Johann Strauss and Franz Lehár.

The opening concert also sets the tone for the festival’s rich programme, which will continue until 16 August under the slogan Tivat – A Sea of Music.

Ahead of the Festival opening, Maestro Tarbuk reflected on both the Orchestra and the programme itself.

“There are many musicians in Boka, and the establishment of the Boka Symphony Orchestra brings mutual benefit both to the musicians of the region and to audiences who, until now, have not truly had the opportunity to experience a fully formed symphony orchestra. It is a matter of both sound and repertoire. Preparations for the concert are progressing very well, and the programme itself is extensive. We are joined by two solo vocalists and the ‘Jadran’ Choir, so it was important to select compositions that would suit their artistic strengths while also being pieces they genuinely wished to perform. We have shaped a programme that audiences will find especially engaging, as it includes some of the greatest masterpieces from the oeuvre of the great Giuseppe Verdi.

We are working to strengthen the Orchestra’s visibility and to perform a diverse repertoire, as building a repertoire today requires mastering a very broad musical range. Also in preparation for TMF is Giovanni Battista Pergolesi’s opera La Serva Padrona, a work from the Neapolitan Baroque period — a lively and exemplary musical comedy which we believe audiences will thoroughly enjoy,” said Tarbuk.

Clarinetist Lara Bubanja, one of the Orchestra’s founders and its music producer, expressed her excitement about performing before the Tivat audience for the first time, as well as collaborating with the “Jadran” Choir.

“Beyond being a remarkable artistic event, the performance of the Boka Symphony Orchestra at this renowned music festival also represents a powerful symbol of unity, collaboration and cultural connection between the three cities of Boka.

Professional musicians from Tivat, Kotor and Herceg Novi are creating a unique musical landscape that confirms how culture transcends boundaries and connects people through shared values, talent and, most importantly, emotion. This will also mark the Orchestra’s first appearance before the Tivat audience.

We are especially looking forward to performing together with the City Choir ‘Jadran’. This is our first collaboration with a choral ensemble, and we truly hope it will continue in the future, she said, adding that 14 musicians from Tivat currently perform within the Orchestra’s permanent ensemble of 45 members, with expectations for that number to grow.

Alongside the general patron, the Tivat Cultural Centre, and the gold sponsor Coca-Cola HBC Montenegro, the Tivat Music Festival is also supported by Luštica Bay, Porto Montenegro and Montenegro Sotheby’s Realty. Individual festival programmes are organised in partnership with additional prominent sponsors and a broad network of programme partners from both Montenegro and abroad.
